The level stone is an erratic block or boulder made of epidote - sericite - gneiss near Dotzigen in the canton of Bern , Switzerland . It is located on the western embankment of the Lyss – Solothurn railway line between Dotzigen and Büren an der Aare , about 800 meters to the northeast from Dotzigen train station.

Surname

The name comes from the time before the first correction of the waters of the Jura , because the gauge for measuring the water level of the Alte Aare was attached to this stone. At that time, was Aare "shot" directly against the rock upon which every now and then fin were shattered.

history

Before the first correction of the Jura waters, a heavily used ferry crossed the Aare to Meienried a little above this location . The paintings on a house built in 1733, which was formerly known as a driving tavern, are a reminder of the times when the ferry operated and the Aare shipping . This is located at the Dotzigen exit, on the right in the direction of Büren. Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of a carriage with eight harnessed horses and the depiction of a raft. On a geometric plan from 1803, the driving avenue and even two landing stages for ferries can be seen in Dotzigen.

The level stone has been one of the protected geological objects of the Canton of Bern since June 22, 1945.

Today the Erratiker lies somewhat forgotten and difficult to access between the railway tracks and the Eichibach .

In an easterly direction, 600 and 1200 meters from the level stone, according to the national map, are the Graue Stein and the Schalenstein Stedtiberg . As the level of stone they are witnesses of during the Würm been initiated in the area of glacial Rhone glacier.
