Sant Joan de Cornudell

Sant Joan de Cornudell is a small church on a steep, reddish cliff east of the town of Castellar de n'Hug in the Comarca Berguedà in Catalonia ( Spain ).

Sant Joan de Cornudell is part of the former Barony Mataplana and the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Bishop of Urgell . It was first mentioned in 921 as the property of the Sant Joan de les Abadesses monastery .

The church is a simple Romanesque Catalan construction and consists of a single nave with a barrel vault. The eastern part of the building is likely an extension that replaced the church's original apse. The west wall is crowned by an espadanya , a small bell tower with an opening. The south wall with the portal is reinforced by three supporting pillars. The stone masonry portal is formed by two arches. In the wall next to the entrance portal, two rows are made of opus spicatum .

The church, now profaned and restored in 1999, may date from the 9th century.
