history
Settlement of the area can be traced back to the Neolithic Age, because a pile dwelling settlement was discovered on the north bank of Lake Biel, near Galsstrasse. Only a few shards from Roman times have been found. Nevertheless, it must be assumed that Erlach was also already settled, like Mullen and Tschugg , where ample remains of Roman buildings were found. In 1932/33 an early medieval burial ground from the 7th century was discovered in the Hasenlauf in the direction of Mullen. The Ulrich Church was built around the turn of the millennium before last. The castle was built around 1100. In 1274 Erlach received city rights from Count Rudolph von Neuenburg.
Attractions
The origins of the Ulrich Church are unclear as to whether it goes back to St. Ulrich von Augsburg (890–973) or was founded by the Fenis (Ulriche). Preference is given to the patronage of Ulrich von Augsburg. In any case, it was built around the turn of the millennium. It was part of the founding equipment of the St. Johannsen Abbey, which was founded in 1185, in the 12th century it was usually referred to as a chapel. Today's tower was built around 1460. The wall painting in the choir and the new building of the nave also date from this period. The tower roof was raised around 1568. Between 1678 and 1680 the church was extended to the west and a sermon hall was added. These works were Abraham Dünz I provided. When the organ was installed in 1779, the nave was raised. This conversion was reversed on the occasion of the renovation in 1954.
