geography

The Jolimont is bounded in the south by the Grosse Moos , in the west and northwest by the Zihl Canal and Grissemoos plain , in the northeast by Lake Biel, and in the east it is separated from the Schaltrain by a depression . The communities of Gampelen , Gals , Tschugg and Erlach BE are at the foot of the hill . The Erlach Castle is located on the north-eastern foothills of the Jolimont. Most of the mountain, which has steep slopes but a flat crest, is forested.

Viticulture is practiced on the sun-exposed south and south-east slopes ( Chasselas , Perdrix blanche , Chardonnay ). The Jolimontgut , a former mountain farm of the Sankt Johannsen Abbey, is located on a cleared island on the plateau . Its late Gothic mansion with a round tower dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Today the estate is used for musical events.

geology

Erratic blocks Tüfelsburdi

Geologically, the upper part of the Jolimont consists of sandstones , some of which contain fossilized shells and shark teeth, and its lower part consists of colorful marls .

On its high plateau, three mighty erratic blocks , called Tüfelsburdi (devil's burden) , druid stones or heath stones, which originally come from the Val de Bagnes , were deposited by the ice age Rhone glacier . The impressive group of foundlings with a volume of around 400 m³ was placed under protection as early as 1872.

history

Fortification in the Jolimont plant, 1914–1918

During the First ( Fortification Murten ) and Second World War , extensive bunkers and fortifications were built on the Jolimont, some of which can be visited.
