history
The city was founded around 1220 by the Burgundian Count Ulrich III. from Neuchâtel . The oldest written town charter dates from 1271. On January 11, 1338, Count Peter von Aarberg signed a castle law contract with Freiburg. On July 26, 1339, Count Peter von Aarberg became field captain of the Freiburg against the Bernese. Count Peter von Aarberg confirmed (receipt) on May 7, 1340 that he had received the wages promised by Freiburg and that Junker Peter von Lobsigen had also been well compensated for the steed he killed by the Bernese. In 1351, Count Peter II of Aarberg , the last lord of the town, pledged Aarberg to the city of Bern for 16,700 guilders . Since the count was no longer able to redeem the pledge, the entire rule finally came to Bern in 1376 through his cousin, Rudolf IV, the count of Neuchâtel zu Nidau.
After the city fire of 1477, Aarberg was rebuilt. The market square was built between the rows of houses. The market rights were extended to the salt, iron and cloth trade, which brought the city an economic boom. In 1798 Aarberg was occupied by French troops. In 1803, Aarberg became the capital of the Aarberg district. In 1832 the municipality of Aarberg was established with its own administration.
The correction of the Aare as part of the Jura water correction with the Hagneck Canal changed the location of Aarberg, which was previously on an island. With the construction of the Bern – Biel railway line, which makes a stopover in Lyss, the movement of goods and people shifted from water to rail and from Aarberg to neighboring Lyss.

The cityscape is shaped by the Middle Ages . On site there are u. a. a late Gothic church and a wooden bridge from 1557.
