After his first job in Zurich with the construction company Locher , in Baden with Robert Moser and in Geneva with Charles Elles, he went on a 14-month study trip to Italy in 1870/71. From 1891 he became an architect in Bern in the management of the Federal Buildings founded in 1888, where he was elected adjunct in 1892 after a brief teaching activity at the Biel Technical Center. He was the chief architect in the office led by engineer Arnold Flükiger for the eighteen years up to his death. There he designed, among other things, the building of today's Federal Archives from 1896 to 1899 and the Federal Mint in Bern's Kirchenfeld district until 1906 as well as several post offices throughout Switzerland.
