The S-Bahn Bern ( French RER Berne ) handles a large part of the regional public transport in the agglomeration of Bern with around 100,000 passengers every day . From 1995, the regional trains began to be registered as S-Bahn. However, as early as 1974, there was a regular S-Bahn service on the routes to Solothurn , Worb and Zollikofen ; Since 1987 there were the diameter line of Thun after Laupen or Freiburg . In 1995 the second diameter line (S2: Schwarzenburg - Trubschachen ) was added. The next upgrade was in 1997 when the diameter lines S3 Biel - Belp and S4 / S44 Bern Bümpliz North Burgdorf were and continue to put into operation. In addition, the remaining standard-gauge regional train services were designated as S33, S5, S51 and S55. Since the timetable change in December 2004, the narrow-gauge lines of the RBS have also been integrated into the S-Bahn number system as S7, S8 and S9. With the 2008 timetable change, the line connections were redesigned, the S11, S22 and S33 were omitted, the S52 and the S6 were added.
With around nine million train kilometers annually, the Bern S-Bahn is the second largest S-Bahn in Switzerland . The route network is roughly congruent with the metropolitan region of Bern .
precursor
As early as May 31, 1964, the RBS predecessor company United Bern – Worb-Bahnen (VBW) introduced Switzerland's first regular timetable on the Worb Dorf – Worblaufen railway line . On May 26, 1974, this was finally extended to the Zollikofen – Bern and Solothurn – Worblaufen lines , which resulted in the country's first integral regularized timetable (ITF) under the name Plan 74 . At the same time, fixed line names and identification colors were introduced, the latter in some cases still valid today. The following four lines operated, with short courses also being marked with a red line signal :
Line J | black | Bern – Jegenstorf (–Solothurn) | originally lines S and |
Line SE | green | Bern – Solothurn, express trains without stopping between Bern and Jegenstorf | today as RegioExpress trains (RE) |
Line W | orange | Bern – Worb village | today line S7 |
Line Z | red | Bern – Unterzollikofen | today line S9 |
Lines and rolling stock
The Bern S-Bahn consists of 13 lines. On certain sections, several lines complement each other every quarter or half hour. With the exception of the S31, which only runs Monday to Friday and only until 9:00 p.m., all lines run at least every hour. In addition, repeaters without line numbers operate on certain sections , some of which do not serve all intermediate stops.

- BLS AG (BLS)
- Regional traffic Bern – Solothurn (RBS)
When the timetable changed on December 12, 2004, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) withdrew from S-Bahn operations in Bern, but instead took over all of the BLS long-distance services. Since the 2011 timetable change, however, SBB has been using RegioExpress trains from / to Bern, although these lines were previously run as InterRegio .
