The Zug Stadtbahn was opened on December 12, 2004 as a comprehensive S-Bahn system in the area of the Canton of Zug and the neighboring regions.

It uses the existing lines of the Swiss Federal Railways , but additional stops have been created. A total of nine new stops were built for the opening of the light rail. The second platform has also been available at the Zythus and Chämleten stops since 2008. The construction of three more stops is planned or under construction. The former regional train stations in Cham , Oberwil and Walchwil have only been served by S-Bahn trains since 2004.

The transition between the Lucerne / Central Switzerland S-Bahn and the Zug urban railway is fluid, so they have a common number range, for example.

history

The Zug Stadtbahn was launched as a project from 1996 by the Economics Department of the Canton of Zug. This project was presented to the population from 7th to 9th May 1999 and various manufacturers of rolling stock presented their latest vehicles. After the successful referendum on March 4, 2001, the project was implemented by the Office for Public Transport.

For a total of 67 million Swiss francs , the following infrastructures for the Zug light rail system were built by December 12, 2004:

  • Structural upgrading and handicapped-accessible design of the six existing train stations Baar , Zug , Cham , Rotkreuz , Oberwil and Walchwil
  • New construction of 9 stops along the two railway lines
  • technical improvement of the SBB route to reduce headway times

Tram line S1

S 1 Baar - Zug - Cham - Rotkreuz (- Lucerne - Sursee )

In order to implement a quarter-hourly service and to be able to improve rail services, the line between Cham and Rotkreuz had to be expanded to double- track. This section, between Cham and Freudenberg, which belongs to the municipality of Risch , was inaugurated on December 10, 2008 and put into operation on December 14, 2008 when the timetable changed . Parallel to the quarter-hourly S1 service, the route is supplemented by the trains of the half-hourly InterRegio line Lucerne - Rotkreuz - Zug - Baar - Thalwil - Zurich HB .

Between 2004 and 2008 new stops were built, namely Baar Neufeld , Baar Lindenpark , Zug Guardian Angel , Zug Chollermüli , Cham Alpenblick , Hünenberg Zythus and Hünenberg Chämleten . However, the latter station is not served by all trains.

With the timetable change on December 13, 2015, the S1 was extended to Sursee .

Due to the large number of park-and-ride options in Rotkreuz, another stop at Rotkreuz-Ost / Rotkreuz-Rüti was planned on the edge of the freight station. However, these plans were removed from the structure plan in 2015. In addition to this new stop, a Freudenberg - Buonas connection is planned so that trains can run from Zug via Cham to Arth-Goldau. However, this will not happen before 2015. This would serve to relieve the route via Walchwil .

This supplement will not be made for the foreseeable future. From June 2019 to the end of 2020 this would have been used very heavily due to the line closure Zug - Arth-Goldau and would have led to significant travel times on the Gotthard line (Zurich-Ticino). However, there are currently no plans to build it. During the construction period of 18 months, the long-distance trains make a hairpin at Rotkreuz station.

Tram line S2

S 2 Baar Lindenpark - Zug - Walchwil (- Arth-Goldau - Erstfeld )

On December 10th, 2008, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the expansion of the S2 at the new Zug Casino stop . The construction project comprised the construction of a third track between Zug main train station and Baar Lindenpark with adjustments to the existing track systems and at the Baar Lindenpark stop as well as the demolition and partial replacement of a shed . The project includes the construction of the two new stops, Zug Casino and Walchwil Hörndli, as well as the expansion of the Zug Oberwil stop into a crossing station . The construction project was estimated at around 30 million Swiss francs. The federal government contributed around 15 million Swiss francs to the infrastructure fund .

The new Zug Casino stop was opened on December 11, 2009 and has been available since the timetable change on December 13, 2009. The entire route of the S2 from Walchwil to Baar Lindenpark and the half-hourly service on this section has been in place since the timetable change on December 12, 2010. Since then, the new Walchwil Hörndli stop has also been used. Almost all the short-haul trains stop in Hörndli .

In addition to the S2, the InterRegio 46 Zurich HB - Erstfeld trains stop in Zug , Arth-Goldau , Schwyz , Brunnen and Flüelen as well as the EuroCity or InterCity 2 Zurich - Lugano (- Milano Centrale ). The S-Bahn trains run from Baar Lindenpark to Walchwil every half hour from Monday to Saturday. Every second move is extended to the first field. The short runs Baar Lindenpark - Walchwil do not operate on Sundays and public holidays.

During the barrier on Lake Zug, the line to Baar-Lindenpark - Oberwil is shortened and completely closed between April 14th and December 12th, 2020. Trains with the same line designation run between Rotkreuz and Flüelen (in off-peak times, continue to Erstfeld).

vehicles

The actual vehicle for operating line 1 is the SBB RABe 523 . When it was commissioned, there were not enough vehicles available so that an SBB RBDe 560 with Bt (NPZ) and a B from Thurbo were used as the intermediate car. Also in 2008 trains of the Regio , the Basel S-Bahn, were used. This has not been the case since December 2008, as the Zug Stadtbahn had new trains and the entire vehicle fleet now consists of twelve RABe 523s.
