The station Erstfeld is the station of the municipality Erstfeld in the Swiss canton of Uri . It is located on the north ramp of the Gotthard Railway and included a SBB Cargo locomotive depot. It is served exclusively by the trains of the Swiss Federal Railways , which own it.

history

The beginnings under the Gotthard Railway

Construction began in the Klus area for the Erstfeld station in 1879. Initially, the station was planned to switch operations to the Gotthard mountain line in Silenen , but it was relocated to Erstfeld. In 1880 a decision was made to build a shed with the approval of the Federal Council. Construction was completed in 1881, and in 1882 the station went into operation together with the Gotthard Railway. In 1883 the Remise was expanded into a subsidiary workshop of the GB after the Bellinzona location was chosen as the main workshop. Ten locations had applied for the award. In 1887 a coach house was built. In 1893 the reception building was expanded to include a waiting room, and a platform hall with a platform was also built. Between 1893 and 1895 the line between Altdorf and Silenen was expanded to double track before the GB was transferred to the SBB in 1913.

After the takeover by SBB

In 1920 the first section of the Gotthard Railway between Erstfeld and Ambri - Piotta was electrified, but until 1921 only 7500 volts alternating current was used to prevent flashovers on the insulators. In 1922 the Lucerne – Immensee line and the Gotthard Railway were electrified, so that the entire line from Lucerne to Chiasso was under the contact wire. The last steam locomotive, the C 5/6 2969, did not leave Erstfeld station until November 25, 1968, after it was still in use as a push locomotive for the rotary snow blower.

1970 to 2000

In 1973 the new Integra Signum control system, costing 5 million francs, was installed. It replaces the central signal box in Arth-Goldau station immediately in front of the Erstfeld station in order to then take over the entire Gotthard north ramp.

In 1992, today's intermediate platform with the attached platforms 2 and 4 was built. Track 3 was dismantled for the platform.

Accident on May 13, 2015

On May 13, 2015, shortly after midnight, an SBB freight train crashed into the flank of a BLS freight train as it exited the station heading south . The two SBB Re 6/6 and Re 4/4 II locomotives and three wagons of the BLS train derailed. The SBB put the property damage at several million francs.

The BLS train coming from the north drove on track 1 and was asked with driving term 6 to pull it forward to the dwarf signal showing the stop . Then a sliding locomotive was provided and a double-traction locomotive was harnessed. When the SBB train approached platform 2, the group exit signal opened . Despite the closed dwarf signal, the BLS train drove off, which resulted in a collision before the exit signal. The security system at Erstfeld station with its unusual signaling dates from the 1970s, when intermediate locomotives were still added to the heavy freight trains .

Opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel

The Gotthard Base Tunnel , which opened in 2016, meant radical changes for Erstfeld. On the one hand, the decades-old locomotive depot that was last owned by SBB Cargo was closed. In return, a locomotive staff location was set up in Erstfeld for SBB Passenger Traffic and the northern intervention center of the base tunnel was also built in Erstfeld.

traffic

The Erstfeld station is served hourly by InterRegio trains and RegioExpress trains in long-distance traffic, and it is the end point of the S2 of the Zug urban railway . In bus traffic it is served by line 1 of Auto AG Uri .

Regional traffic

There is also a pair of trains on the Lucerne S-Bahn , which runs as an extension of the S3 (Lucerne– Brunnen ) to Erstfeld.

The Erstfeld depot has existed since the Gotthard Railway was founded and has been repeatedly adapted to meet requirements. In 1922, in preparation for the new electric locomotives, the free-standing coach house that still exists today was added to the old steam locomotive cremise.

The most modern and powerful locomotives ( Gotthard locomotives ) were stationed in Erstfeld for the needs of the Gotthard Railway . In 1988 these were: 17 SBB Re 4/4 III , six SBB Ee 3/3 , 28 SBB Re 6/6 , one SBB Bm 4/4 , 27 SBB Ae 6/6 , four Rotary snow blowers . The first rotary steam snow blower, which was in operation from 1896 to 1982, is still in working order in the Lucerne Museum of Transport .

On March 22, 1987, the attic of the Remisenhalle caught fire. The fire was triggered by an arc caused by a short circuit on the roof of a locomotive. The entire attic then had to be renewed. Only two and a half years later, on the night of February 27th to 28th, 1990, the roof beams burned again when, after a hurricane, a brick clamp was blown onto the catenary and the resulting arc set the hall roof on fire. Almost a year later it was rebuilt.

After the main task of the Erstfeld depot until the beginning of the 1990s was to provide the locomotives for the additional pushing or pre-tensioning service, the current block trains also eliminated the shunting process in Erstfeld, which led to a loss of jobs. With the division of SBB into the three units of infrastructure, passenger transport and cargo, the Erstfeld depot went to the Cargo division. In 2004 the cargo depot was relocated to Arth-Goldau. With the opening of the base tunnel, the need for pushing performance decreased and the depot as a place of work for train drivers was closed, and facilities were dismantled.

Maintenance and Intervention Center (EIZ) Erstfeld

For the Gotthard Base Tunnel, SBB has set up a maintenance and intervention center (EIZ) each in Erstfeld and Biasca . In the event of an incident, the fire and rescue trains leave the two locations.

In 2002 the SBB Historic designated the depot as an outside station of the Lucerne Museum of Transport. It would then take over this function after the opening of the base tunnel in 2016. The large engine hall is to be retained for this purpose. The SBB Historic Team Erstfeld association looks after the rolling stock of the historic Erstfeld depot.
