Swiss Museum of Transport
The Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne is a versatile transport and communication museum and the most visited museum in Switzerland . It shows a large collection of locomotives , cars , ships and aircraft as well as exhibits from the field of communication . In addition to the museum, the Verkehrshaus also houses a planetarium , the “movie theater” and the “Swiss Chocolate Adventure”. The Swiss Museum of Transport is the operator of the Museum of Transport . The number of visitors to the museum was 519,997 in 2017, the other offers of the film theater, Swiss Chocolate Adventure and planetarium recorded a total of 252,080 visitors.
history
The foundation of the Museum of Transport was based on the desire to create a railway museum in Switzerland. In 1942, the Swiss Museum of Transport was founded with its headquarters in Zurich , which included SBB and PTT , private railways and transport organizations as well as large companies from trade, industry and tourism. However, since no suitable site for the planned museum could be found in Zurich, the city of Lucerne offered the association a 22,500 m² site at the Lido, directly on Lake Lucerne .
Construction work began in 1957. The construction was financially supported by the federal government and the city and canton of Lucerne . The Swiss Museum of Transport was opened on July 1, 1959; it quickly became the most popular museum in Switzerland. Alfred Waldis was co-founder and founding director . "No matter how many more directors come, Alfred Waldis will always be Mister Verkehrshaus." wrote the Neue Luzerner Zeitung on his death.
The Verkehrshaus became known to a larger audience in Germany through the sketch Im Verkehrshaus (1976) by Lucerne comedian Emil Steinberger .
The storm in summer 2005 caused a flood in the museum on the night of August 21st to 22nd, which inundated parts of the exhibitions. The basement rooms of the shipping and aviation departments were damaged.
Exhibitions
The museum, in which you can touch many objects and engage yourself interactively , is divided into different areas:
Rail transport
The extensive collection on rail transport offers, among other things, Swiss rail vehicles from the Spanish Brötli Bahn to trams and cogwheel trains to the New Alpine Transversal Railway (NEAT), simulators, films and information stations. On three sides of the Gotthard Railway model, which is also installed there, the north ramp of the Gotthard Railway from the Erstfeld station via the three spiral tunnels at Wassen to the Göschenen tunnel portal is reproduced. This model was created in 1959 by the Lucerne railway and model making friends in around 30,000 hours and has been in the Museum of Transport since it opened. Since summer 2016 there has also been a train simulator in the rail transport hall with which visitors can drive through the NEAT base tunnel. The “Mobility of the Future” exhibition area shows future visions in public transport from the perspective of SBB .
Road traffic
The road traffic collection shows horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, motorcycles and cars as well as an exhibition on the subject of road safety. The latter was realized in cooperation with the bfu . One attraction is the car theater, in which the audience is presented with a large selection of vehicles from all areas of car history in a kind of television show. The selected automobiles are fetched from a high-bay warehouse with a car lift and presented. On the facade of the road traffic hall there are 344 signal boards from Swiss road traffic.
Aerospace
In the exhibition on air and space travel more than 30 aircraft and flying machines can be visited, including by the brothers Henri and Armand Dufaux designed biplane Dufaux 4 , the oldest Swiss aircraft. The other exhibits include a Blériot XI -b, Fokker F.VIIa , Lockheed 9 Orion , Fieseler Fi 156 Storch , Douglas DC-3 , an Alouette III helicopter , Bertrand Piccard's Breitling Orbiter 2 and Claude Nicollier's 1992 with the Space Shuttle flight STS-46 launched EURECA research satellite . In addition, hundreds of original aviation objects from forks to parachutes to cut engines are shown, supplemented with dioramas, experiments and flight simulators as well as models such as that of the airship Ville de Lucerne . In 2019, a fully equipped Bombardier Challenger 604 ambulance jet from REGA was also put on permanent display.
The Museum of Transport also houses a space exhibition, which shows, among other things, space travel in popular culture, the race to the moon and a walkable Martian landscape with replicas of Mars rovers .
Shipping, cable cars and tourism
Starting with the dugout, the history of shipping in Switzerland is told, from the 1: 1 sectional model of the steam system of a paddle steamer to original ships and countless models. The Nautirama multimedia show can also be found here .
The entry to the Mésoscaphe submersible , the only submarine to date that is approved for use in Switzerland, is also from the shipping hall . The submarine was designed by Auguste Piccard in 1963 and was used at the Expo 64 in Lausanne. The submarine was restored in over 28,000 working hours and has been accessible since 2014.
The first cable car cabin of the Wetterhorn lift can be seen in the cable car exhibition.
The Livemap Switzerland in the tourism exhibition area is a 200 m² aerial photo of Switzerland on a scale of 1: 20,000. It can be walked on with felt slippers. With the help of augmented reality , the aerial photo can be expanded to include weather data, air traffic and rail traffic data or personal photos using an app.
Media World
The Media World shows the development of the media and houses, among other things, virtual reality glasses , a television studio and a green box . The exhibition was realized by Red Bull Media House . In October 2016 it replaced the previously existing exhibition on the topic of media.
Hans Erni Museum
The art museum, built in 1979 on the grounds of the Verkehrshaus, shows a large exhibition with works by the Lucerne artist Hans Erni . In the auditorium on the second floor there is the double 18-meter-long mural Panta rhei , on which the greats of Western intellectual history are depicted.
Amateur radio
The Association of Swiss Shortwave Amateurs , USKA for short, operates a shortwave radio station and a VHF , UHF radio station with the callsign HB9O in the museum. Every Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday there are amateur radio demonstrations.

planetarium
The Planetarium of the Museum of Transport is the largest sky simulator in Switzerland and was opened on July 1, 1969. The dome, which was renewed in 2001, has a diameter of 18 meters and a total area of around 502 m 2 . Various programs use projection and audio technology to show the starry sky and the phenomena associated with it. After a major renovation (including new seating and a modular stage), the planetarium was reopened on March 6, 2014. Since then, it has had one of the world's most modern digital projection systems from Evans & Sutherland , which replaced the previously used Zeiss optical projector .
Movie theater
In the Verkehrshaus Filmtheater (formerly IMAX film theater) several documentaries are shown daily. The film theater was opened in 1996 as the first IMAX cinema in Switzerland. It has 398 seats. At 25 m × 19 m, the screen is the largest screen in Switzerland. In 2008 the movie theater was upgraded to the Dolby 3D digital standard. In 2010 the “IMAX Filmtheater” was renamed “Verkehrshaus Filmtheater”, as the films are no longer shown mainly in 70mm IMAX format , but in digital form. In the evening the film theater shows feature films, broadcasts of ballet , opera performances and classical concerts as well as travel lectures.
Swiss Chocolate Adventure
The Swiss Chocolate Adventure is a multimedia exhibition on raw materials, history, and the value and transport chain of Swiss chocolate . The exhibition was opened in June 2014 and covers 700 m 2 . A ride takes 25 minutes. The exhibition is also offered in French , Italian , English , Spanish , Korean , Mandarin and Brazilian Portuguese via audio guides . At the end of the journey there is the opportunity to taste chocolate.

Gotthard tunnel show
The Gotthard Tunnel Show was an exhibition on the construction of the Gotthard tunnel , which visitors drove through by train. It was in operation from 1997 to November 2013.
"HiFlyer"
From October 2000 to July 2004 a HiFlyer tethered balloon was in operation in the Verkehrshaus . After the fatal accident on July 23, 2004 , operations were stopped.
