The C 5/6 is a steam locomotive of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).
General
The Gotthard locomotive C 5/6 had a standard load of 320 t at 26 km / h on the Gotthard sections and was used there in express train and freight traffic. In the lowlands she could pull a 1000-ton train at 22 km / h. It was thus far more efficient than its predecessors, including the C 4/5 , so that it was nicknamed "Elephant". Since the SLM's C 4/5 had good experience, its design was adopted as the basis for the C 5/6.
The C 5/6 is the largest SBB steam locomotive and, alongside the express train locomotive A 3/5, probably the best known.
business
The C 5/6 were originally designed for Gotthard operation. Due to the competition from electric locomotives that arose over the next few years , they were pushed into the lowlands. Some locomotives were used for shunting operations at Basel or Chiasso stations and often on the late electrified line between Bellinzona and Luino .
During the Second World War, the SBB 16 C 5/6 rented out to the Deutsche Reichsbahn . They were mainly used in Baden , Württemberg , Alsace and Bavaria . After the war some were rented to France. In both cases, the railways did not have enough of their own locomotives to transport goods intended for Switzerland, which is why the SBB made steam locomotives available.
No. 2976 was oil fired in 1953. This proved itself very well in daily operation and was more economical in consumption than the coal-fired machines. However, no other locomotives were converted, as the SBB's focus had been on electric traction since the 1920s. The "Elefant" C 5/6 2976 was parked at the end of 1962 and was scrapped in 1965.
Preserved machines
Whereas Historical Foundation heritage of the SBB (SBB Historic) preserved 2978 ( TSI-number : 90 85 0002 978-4) was built in 1917 and was thus the last commissioned in steam locomotive of the SBB. It is stationed in the Rotonde at Delémont and is repeatedly used for special trips, for example in 1997 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Swiss railway.
The 2969, built in 1915, ran the last official SBB steam train, which ended on November 30, 1968 in Winterthur. It was then erected as a memorial in front of the SLM halls in Winterthur until 1997 , before the Eurovapor in Sulgen began to process it. With the help of the monument locomotive 2958 previously set up in Olten , it was possible to get the locomotive operational again by autumn 2017. The first big trip took place from October 20, 2017 to October 22, together with the 2978 from SBB Historic. The route led over the Gotthard route; the north ramp was climbed with the two C 5/6 at the Zugspitze and the B 3/4 1367 as a push-on locomotive. During the descent on the south ramp, however, the 2978 was damaged due to a hot rod bearing and had to be disconnected. The official inauguration drive took place on November 25, 2017, with the locomotive being christened Alfred Escher . The name tag is attached to the driver's cab.

The non-operational C 5/6 2965 (90 85 0002 965-1), former monument locomotive in Erstfeld ) is exhibited in the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne .
