The SBB Bm 4/4 is a heavy shunting locomotive still frequently used by the Swiss Federal Railways SBB. It will be replaced by the SBB Am 843 . The standard load is 365 tons at 15 km / h.

The locomotives should also be able to be used as light mainline locomotives in order to enable the complete replacement of the steam operation. There was also an interest on the part of the then Federal Department of Economic Affairs (EVD) and the then military department (EMD) in expanding the traction reserve independent of the contact wire, which is why the EVD contributed 60% to the production costs of 16 locomotives and the EMD contributed to the production costs of six locomotives.
