The Société Anonyme des Ateliers de Sécheron ( SAAS ) was a manufacturer of electrical engineering in Geneva until it was merged with ABB in 1988 . The name refers to the location, a city quarter in Geneva.

history

The SAAS emerged in 1918 as a rescue company from the Compagnie de l'industrie électrique et mécanique (CIEM), which had run into financial difficulties . The purpose of the company was to provide production capacity for the electrification of the SBB network. Under the SAAS, “Sécheron” became the company's synonymous brand name; the eponymous village was incorporated into the municipality of Geneva in 1931 as part of Le Petit-Saconnex.

As early as 1919, Brown Boveri & Cie (BBC) was the main shareholder of SAAS. Five years later, SAAS became independent and remained independent until 1970, when the BBC became the sole shareholder again. The name was not changed to BBC-Sécheron AG until 1982.

In 1988 the BBC merged with the Swedish ASEA concern to form ABB . However, the new company separated from the manufacturing sector related to traction. This decision resulted in the creation of a new independent company that resumed this area, Sécheron AG . For its part, ABB-Sécheron AG monitors transformer manufacturing. In 1992 ABB-Sécheron relocated and let Sécheron AG occupy the original location alone.

There is no known reference to Carrosserie de Sécheron , a manufacturer of bodies for cars and commercial vehicles active from 1936 to 1967 .

Business areas

The company manufactured oxygen welding equipment , electrodes and mercury vapor rectifiers . In addition, it supplied the electrical equipment for hydropower plants , built electrical equipment for locomotives , e.g. B. for the SBB series Be 4/7 , Ae3 / 5 , Ae 3/6 III , Re 4/4 II and Re 6/6 , as well as devices for regulating the speed of trains , subways , trams and trolleybuses .
