The SBB Am 843 is a modern shunting and freight train locomotive of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). It replaces older shunting locomotives such as the SBB Bm 4/4 and SBB Bm 6/6 . The Am 843 is used by the Infrastructure Division (843 001ff), the Passenger Transport Division (041ff) and SBB Cargo (050ff).
history
The Infrastructure division uses the Am 843 primarily in the large marshalling yards and passenger traffic in Basel and Chiasso, and at SBB Cargo it is primarily used for delivery trips in local freight traffic.
In addition to the 76 SBB machines, four machines were delivered to BLS AG (Am 843 501–843 504) and three to Sersa (Am 843 151–153).
Five of the SBB Am 843 are set up for use in Germany ( PZB , second driver's cab on the right, 843 091 to 843 095). Among other things, they are used in local deliveries in Weil am Rhein, Karlsruhe and in the RoLa terminal in Freiburg im Breisgau.
technical features
The Am 843 is the first locomotive in its performance class to have a microparticle filter and is one of the cleanest diesel locomotives. It should be noted, however, that almost the entire route network in Switzerland is electrified. Diesel locomotives offer the operator the advantage that the locomotive does not have to be changed for delivery trips to non-electrified sidings.
The Am 843 is based on the diesel-hydraulic standard locomotives of the type G 1700-2 BB from the Kiel-based rail vehicle manufacturer Vossloh , but, unlike the standard version, is designed for left-hand traffic in Switzerland by arranging the control panels, front doors and exhaust chimney in mirror symmetry. They also have a front railing with fenders and built-in headlights.
All SBB locomotives are equipped with Integra-Signum and ZUB 262ct , so they can be used on the main line. Three SBB locomotives (Am 843 026-028) and those of the BLS are equipped with ETCS Level 2 in order to be able to run construction trains on the Level 2 lines Mattstetten – Rothrist and Frutigen – Visp.
The Am 843 064 was equipped as a prototype with the new CargoFlex type Scharfenberg hybrid coupling from Voith in August 2018 . It is part of the one-person shunting operation automation project by SBB Cargo.
