Bellinzona station, train entrance track 2 (2017)

The Bellinzona railway station is a railway station in the Swiss town of Bellinzona and the largest railway junction of Canton Ticino .

history

The station was opened in 1874 as part of the opening of the Ticino valley railways with the routes Biasca - Bellinzona - Lugano - Chiasso and Bellinzona - Locarno . In 1882, with the opening of the Gotthard tunnel and the associated start of operations on the Airolo - Biasca line, the connection to the north and German-speaking Switzerland came .

Since the commissioning of TILO , the S-Bahn network in Ticino and Lombardy , in 2004, Bellinzona has been the center of operations. S-Bahn trains run from Bellinzona to Biasca , Chiasso , Locarno or Albate-Camerlata , and at peak times to Luino .

In 2008, the SBB Cargo site hit the headlines when workers went on strike after the SBB ordered rigorous dismantling measures for the site.

From 2014 to 2016, the Bellinzona station was renovated and expanded for 36 million Swiss francs. On October 14, 2016, the converted train station, Porta del Ticino , was inaugurated.

On September 16, 2016, the Swiss Post announced that it would be issuing new definitive stamps with Swiss train stations. The facade of the converted Bellinzona train station is shown on the stamp with the value of CHF 1.50, the stamp was designed by Marc Weller.

With the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel for passenger traffic on December 11, 2016, travel time between Bellinzona and German-speaking Switzerland will be reduced by around 45 minutes.

Accidents

On April 23, 1924, two SBB express trains collided in Bellinzona. 14 people lost their lives in the accident, including the former German Vice Chancellor Karl Helfferich .

investment

In addition to the reception building, the station has three central platforms, one of which comprises a shortened stub track and thus serves as a side platform at the height of the reception building. In addition, there are no platform through and overtaking tracks for freight trains. To the north of the passenger station there are parking facilities and workshops for locomotives.

business

The operation is handled by the SBB and the TILO , which serve the station with long-distance traffic or with three lines of the S-Bahn Ticino . In addition, various bus lines from various companies run from the station forecourt to the area.

future

NEAT

Despite the planned bypass of Bellinzona , which was postponed due to a lack of funds, the station is to remain a long-distance stop even after the opening of the Gotthard base tunnel. In the course of the construction of the Ceneri base tunnel, it was initially planned to replace the current long-distance stations in Bellinzona and Lugano with a new long-distance station called Ticino Sud , located at the intersection of the NEAT and the old line in Camorino . In May 2007, however, the SBB distanced itself from the plans and continue to provide for long-distance trains to stop in city centers.

TILO

Due to capacity bottlenecks at Bellinzona station, the S20 and S10 train route Bellinzona - Albate-Camerlata will be extended by one station north to Castione-Arbedo , as there is enough space to turn around .
