Train arriving in Locarno station

The train station of Locarno no longer consists of two connected terminal stations of different gauges together. The Swiss Federal Railways operate the Giubiasco – Locarno line between Bellinzona and Locarno , a standard gauge branch of the Gotthard Railway . In 1912, the meter-gauge Centovalli Railway coming from Domodossola was completed, which today has its underground terminus there.

Before the renovation of the station, the trains of the Centovalli Railway stopped at a separate platform on the station square. In the course of this renovation, the standard-gauge part of the station was given a tongue platform between tracks 2 and 3. The freight transport facilities of both railways were removed and the FART underground station was built in their place .

The station is located in the municipality of Muralto , the municipal boundary to Locarno runs along the Torrente Ramogna stream west of the station.

traffic

In the FART section, regional, RegioExpress and panorama trains run to Intragna, Camedo and Domodossola. The SBB part was the end point of the hourly InterRegio line from Basel and Zurich from December 2004 to December 2016. Since then, the station has only been served by two daily InterCity trains from Basel for long-distance traffic, plus relief trains on public holidays and weekends. From December 2020, the Basel / Zurich-Locarno InterRegio line is to be reintroduced through a cooperation between SBB and SOB , making Locarno an integral long-distance stop again.
