Border between Italy and Switzerland
Route - straight ahead
SSIF to Domodossola

The Centovalli Railway runs from Locarno in the Swiss canton of Ticino through the Centovalli to the Italian border. It continues through the Valle Vigezzo as Vigezzina to Domodossola in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola . It connects the Gotthard Railway with the railway line through the Simplon .

history

Like the former Maggia Valley Railway and the Locarno – Madonna del Sasso funicular railway , the Centovalli Railway can also be traced back to the initiative of the Mayor of Locarno, Francesco Balli, towards the end of the 19th century. After the First World War had delayed the construction work started in 1912, the line was officially opened on November 25, 1923.

The international railway is operated on the Swiss side by the railway company Ferrovie autolinee regionali ticinesi (FART), on the Italian side, where the railway is called Ferrovia Vigezzina-Cent , by the Società subalpina di imprese ferroviarie (SSIF). The company has a state treaty between the Swiss Federal Council and the King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele III. , dated November 12, 1918.

On August 7th and 8th 1978, the railway suffered severe damage from floods, especially on the Italian section, where two bridges were destroyed and several hundred meters of track were washed away. International traffic could not be resumed until the summer of 1980.

Until 1990, the Piazza della Stazione, Locarno's train station square, was the terminus. The underground station has been in operation since then. The current underground route between the terminus and the San Martino station was built from 1983 to 1990. The tunnel, which opened on December 17, 1990, is 2,791 m long and has two additional stops (San Antonio, Solduno). The first 1512 m long section (Locarno - San Antonio) was built using the mining method, the remaining part (San Antonio-Solduno-San Martino) was excavated. Instead of the estimated 38 million francs, the new building devoured around 130 million francs.

Lines

Ruinacci Viaduct at Camedo

Starting from Locarno train station, the railway line runs underground to the S. Martino stop, where the tunnel ends. In Ponte Brolla the route leaves the Maggia valley and crosses the Pedemonte in a westerly direction to Intragna . This is where the actual Centovalli begins , which is so called up to the border with Italy at Camedo , and at the same time the steeper ascent of the route begins here. After the border, the train passes through the Valle Vigezzo with the larger towns of Re , Malesco and Santa Maria Maggiore , where the highest point is reached at 836 m.

This is followed by an initially gentle, then increasingly steep descent along the southern flank of the valley to the Trontano station . Between Trontano and Masera in the Toce valley , the route has a maximum gradient of 60 per thousand and the smallest curve radii of 50 m. After a short crossing of the Tocetal you will reach the underground terminus under Domodossola train station.

Verdasio train station

In the Swiss section, the line has 14 stations and stops, on the Italian side a total of 19, although the stops between Re and the national border are only served sporadically. There is no continuous timetable throughout the day . The whole trip takes about an hour and 45 minutes.

For the first four years, the existing tracks of the Locarno tram across the Piazza Grande were also used between the Locarno train station and S. Antonio . In 1927 a separate line was opened for the Centovalli and Maggia Valley Railway, which circumvented the city center. In 1990 the tunnel between Locarno train station and S. Martino was opened. From both of the earlier lines, embedded rails can still be seen in the road surface.

technology

The narrow-gauge railway has a track width of 1000 mm and has been operated with 1200 volts direct current since it opened. The overhead line voltage today is between 840 and 1620 volts, which would correspond to a nominal voltage of 1350 volts, although officially the voltage was never increased. The rectifier stations are located in Ponte Brolla, Intragna, Verdasio, Re and Trontano. While the Swiss section was equipped with light signals and a section block back in 1963 , the notoriously financially weak SSIF was only able to adapt its section to this technical standard at the end of the 1990s.

Rolling stock

The traffic on the Centovalli Railway is carried out exclusively with multiple units and multiple units.

See also: List of vehicles on the Centovalli Railway .

The main load was taken over by 2007 (commissioning of the 3 four-part SSIF panorama multiple units 81-89 / 810-812) the 12 double multiple units ABe 4/6 from Vevey Technologies from the year 1992. 8 of these vehicles are at FART (ABe 4/6 51– 58, 57–58 originally Ae 4/6, 51 burned out on January 15, 2009, 55–58 conversion to ABe 4/8 2011) and 4 discontinued at SSIF (ABe 4/6 61–64). In addition, the ABDe 6/6 31–32 of the FART and the ABe 8/8 21–24 of the SSIF are sometimes also used in cross-border traffic. The SSIF's local traffic is handled by the ABe 6/6 33–35 (ex Ferrovia Lugano-Ponte Tresa ). The vehicle park is supplemented by 4 passenger cars from the FART (B 120–123) and some of the SSIF (AB 105, B 106–107, A 130 & A 201) as well as historic vehicles (AB 110–111). At FART, a Tm 2/2 9 is used for rail service; at the SSIF the ABFe 4/4 16 and Be 4/4 18 (Squadra Manutenzione). The ABFe 4/4 17 serves the historical trains.

The FART want to completely renew their rail transport fleet by 2023. The purchase of four four-car and four three-car trains is planned. The FOT supports procurement, as preliminary investigations have shown. The FART justifies the complete replacement of the existing fleet primarily with the BehiG , whose specifications cannot be complied with with the existing, around 25-year-old ABe 4/6 and ABe 4/8.

Because the railway Locarno-Domodossola together with the Simplon line the fastest connection between the Ticino and the Valais and between the Locarno region and the French-speaking Switzerland (since the opening of and Lötschberg base tunnel ) to the Bernese Oberland is that most Swiss rates of direct traffic are continuous also valid on the SSIF from the Swiss-Italian border to Domodossola as well as the FS route Domodossola – Iselle, in particular the half-fare card and the general card .

There are special day passes for tourists that allow you to break your journey (Biglietto TURISTICO). On the Swiss side, these are available for CHF 25.00 (CHF 35.00 in first class) and Locarno - Santa Maria Maggiore for CHF 20.00 (CHF 28.00 in first class) for the entire route . On the Italian one you can get the entire route including the funicular in Locarno to Madonna del Sasso for € 27, without the funicular for € 17 (there and back for € 23). From the villages of Valle Vigezzo , the connection by train and funicular costs € 22, a one-way round trip without the cable car € 18 (as of 2016). There are also other offers and cooperation tickets.

A surcharge of currently (2016) CHF 1.50 or € 1.50 is levied on the Italian section for journeys with the panorama trains newly acquired by SSIF.

The bicycles are not permitted. However, it is possible to rent bicycles in Camedo and return them in Ponte Brolla. Combined train travel / bike rental tickets are offered for this purpose.
