The Funicolare Locarno – Madonna del Sasso (FLMS) cable car connects the city center of Locarno (Switzerland) with the pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso , which is located on a promontory above Locarno in the municipality of Orselina .
In Orselina there is a connection to the valley station of the cable car to the Locarno local mountains Cardada and Cimetta, which is directly next to the FLMS mountain station .
history
After Locarno was connected to the Ticino Valley Railways (later Gotthard Railway Company ) in 1874, the mayor of Locarno, Francesco Balli, founded the Pro Locarno e Dintorni association with the aim of promoting tourism in the region.
Balli received the concessions for various narrow-gauge railways in Locarnese. Ultimately, however, only the Maggia Valley Railway (Locarno – Ponte Brolla – Bignasco) (1907), the Locarno urban tram (1908) and the Centovalli Railway to Domodossola, Italy (1923), which later merged to form Ferrovie autolinee regionali ticinesi (FART), were built the funicular described here (1906).
technology
The cable car, powered by an electric drive in the mountain station, overcomes the height difference of 173 m on a route length of 825 m with a maximum gradient of 300 per thousand and a speed of 3.5 m / s. When they opened in 1906, the two cars were still fitted with a wooden structure, while today's cars have a metal structure.
The three intermediate stations Grand-Hôtel, Belvedere and Santuario (Madonna del Sasso) lie between the endpoints of Locarno and Orselina. The Grand-Hôtel station will not be served until further notice as the hotel is closed.
