The Regional Bus and Rail Company of Canton Ticino , abbreviated FART , are a semi-public urban transport and tourism companies in the Swiss canton of Ticino , located in Locarno . 51.40% of the share capital is held by the Canton of Ticino, 34.14% by the Swiss Confederation and 7.75% by municipalities. The remaining 6.71% are privately owned.

The company operates

  • a large bus network with regional and local routes in Locarnese,
  • the Centovalli Railway ,
  • the Intragna - Pila - Costa cable car (cantonal permit) and
  • the small aerial cableway Verdasio - Rasa (cantonal permit).

The Centovalli Railway is part of an international rail link between the Gotthard Railway in Locarno and the Simplon Railway in Domodossola ( Italy ). This railway is operated on the Italian side (in Val Vigezzo) by its own company, the Società subalpina di imprese ferroviarie (SSIF). However, the vehicles of the two companies are in use together.

The company was originally called Ferrovie Regionali Ticinesi (FRT). It was renamed Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi (FART) by resolution of the General Assembly on June 30, 1961. The FRT took over the Società Tramvie Elettriche Locarnesi (STL) in 1923 and in 1952 (GV resolution of May 30th) it merged (financially) retrospectively to January 1st, 1949 (although an annual report for 1950 was still published) with Locarno-Ponte -Brolla-Bignasco-Bahn (LPB) in order to meet the conditions for receiving federal private railway aid .

On April 24, 1960, the Locarno tram, which ran from Minusio Esplanade to Solduno, and until 1932 to the Church of San Antonio, was closed. The bus service that was set up instead was extended at both ends; today it runs from Tenero to Ascona. The Ponte Brolla – Bignasco line was closed on November 15, 1965, and the FART bus service took over the day after. If the fastest train was in Bignasco after 72 minutes, the bus arrives after 48 minutes, in off-peak times after 43 minutes. In the opposite direction, the journey takes five to seven minutes longer according to the timetable.
