The community is located above Locarno on the mountainside with a view of Lake Maggiore . The municipality was formerly called Consiglio Mezzano (from Concilium medievale). Orselina and Muralto belonged together until 1881 .

history

Aerial photo (1953)

In 1881, the current municipality of Muralto, the lake, formerly known as the "lower Orselina", separated from the "Vicinia di Orselina", which had existed as a municipality since 1803. In the decades before, the two communities had separated more and more socially and spatially, and in 2011 a referendum failed to merge the communities of Locarno , Muralto , Minusio , Orselina, Brione sopra Minusio , Mergoscia and Tenero-Contra .
