Livio Vacchini (born February 27, 1933 in Locarno ; † April 2, 2007 in Basel ) was a Swiss architect from the Ticino School and professor emeritus of architecture.

Life

Livio Vacchini was the son of Mario Vittorio Giuseppe Ressiga-Vachini and Rosa Maria Gurgo; from 1953 to 1958 he studied with Rino Tami at the ETH Zurich . After a stay in Stockholm and Paris from 1959 to 1961 he founded his own architecture studio in Locarno; he worked u. a. closely with Luigi Snozzi and Aurelio Galfetti . His work was shaped by Greek antiquity and Italian rationalism , as well as by the architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe , Arne Jacobsen , Louis I. Kahn and Rudolf Schwarz . He was visiting professor at the ETH Zurich (1976) and at the Polytechnic University of Milan (1982). From 1995 to 2001 he ran another office in Basel with Silvia Gmür .

Vacchini was a member of the so-called Tendenza and became internationally known in 1975 with the Zurich exhibition “Architecture of Rebellion”. Together with his colleagues Mario Botta , Aurelio Galfetti , Luigi Snozzi and other Ticino architects, he campaigned against the urban sprawl in the Swiss canton of Ticino .

Vacchini's most important works include the schools in Locarno , Losone (together with Aurelio Galfetti) and Montagnola as well as the postal center in Locarno, the multi-purpose hall in Losone and the redesign of the “Piazza del Sole” in Bellinzona . He gained international attention not only with the construction of the new architecture school in Nancy, France (1993–1995).

His last larger buildings were more controversial among experts because of formalism. These included the main post office building in Locarno from 1996, the gymnasium of the barracks in Losone from 1997 and the “La Ferriera” commercial building in the “Quartiere Nuovo” of Locarno, built in 2003 and encased in steel grating.
