The Milan Polytechnic (also Politechnikum Milan or Polytechnic University of Milan ; Italian : Politecnico di Milano ) is a state engineering technical university in the northern Italian city ​​of Milan .

history

It was founded in 1863 by scholars and influential industrial families in Milan as the “Istituto Tecnico Superiore”. The founding rector was the mathematician Francesco Brioschi ; other well-known professors Luigi Cremona and Giulio Natta , Nobel Prize Winners for Chemistry 1963.

The Politecnico, which was given its current name in 1937, is considered one of the leading European universities of engineering , architecture and design .

The university consists of 17 departments and a network of nine "schools" in seven campuses, spread over the regions of Lombardia and Emilia-Romagna :

  • Campus Leonardo is located on the Piazza Leonardo da Vinci in Milan and has existed since 1927. Since then, the campus has spanned several smaller camps in the immediate vicinity (Campus Leonardo, Campus Bonardi, Campus Clericetti, Campus Mancinelli, Campus Gran Sasso and Campus Colombo).
  • Campus Bovisa is in the city of Milan , district Bovisa and has existed since 1989. The campus Bovisa today consists of the campus Durando (opened in 1994) and the campus La Masa (opened in 1997).
  • Campus Como is in the city of Como and has existed since 1987.
  • Campus Cremona is in the city of Cremona and has been in existence since 1987.
  • Campus Lecco is in the city of Lecco and has existed since the beginning of the 90s.
  • Campus Mantova is in the city of Mantova and has been in existence since 1999.
  • Campus Piacenza is in the city of Piacenza and has existed since 1997.

Currently around 43,000 students are being looked after by around 1,400 professors and lecturers. The rector is Ferruccio Resta .

The MIP Politecnico di Milano Business School is a consortium made up of the Politecnico University and numerous industrial and institutional partners. MIP offers 13 training programs, 8 of which are masters programs.

The following degrees are offered at the 6 engineering schools and 3 architecture schools:

  • Bachelor of Science - B.Sc. ( Laurea )
  • Master of Science - M.Sc. (Laurea Specialistica / Magistrale)
  • Master's programs - (Master Universitario)
  • Doctoral Studies / Programs - Ph.D. (Dottorato di Ricerca)

To promote particularly talented students, the Milan Polytechnic together with the Turin Polytechnic founded the Alta Scuola Politecnica in 2004, based in Milan and Turin.
