Giovanni Battista Pirelli (born December 21, 1848 in Varenna in the Habsburg kingdom of Lombardo-Veneto , † October 20, 1932 in Milan ) was an Italian mathematician , engineer and freedom fighter .

Life

He attended school in Como and studied mathematics at the Universities of Pavia and Milan . Here he joined the Italian national movement, which fought for the independence of Italy under the leadership of Giuseppe Mazzini and Giuseppe Garibaldi . In the run-up to the national unification of Italy, he fought with the red shirts against the Austrian occupying power. After the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, he entered the Senate of the new nation-state.

After traveling through Switzerland and Germany from 1870/71 to familiarize himself with the production techniques of the rubber industry there, Giovanni Battista Pirelli took out a loan and founded a rubber factory in Milan in 1872. He was in competition with the dominant French industry. He initially had around 35 workers and some knowledge of the vulcanization process .

Pirelli produced wires , insulated cables , and also the first telegraph and telephone wires for the new army of Italy . For which opened in Milan in 1883 Central Edison - power station he delivered the rubber-covered novel cable. From 1887 he also produced and laid underwater cables .

From 1890 Pirelli began producing the first air-filled bicycle tires . From 1899 he also supplied the rapidly growing Italian automobile industry with pneumatic tires. From 1901 his older son Piero Pirelli worked in the company.

1902 Giovanni Battista Pirelli opened a production site in Spanish Barcelona that manufactures and electrical cables. In 1917 he entered the high-voltage cable business .

Since Pirelli achieved its largest sales in foreign markets, it was largely independent of Italian economic policy.
