Life

Adriano was the son of the company's founder, Camillo Olivetti , who came from a Jewish family . His mother was a Waldensian .

April 1918 he volunteered for the 4th Alpini - Regiment . After studying in the USA , Adriano graduated as a chemical engineer from the Politecnico di Torino in 1924 . Adriano drove the car with which the socialist Filippo Turati fled to France in 1926 .

In 1926 he joined his father's company. In 1932 he was promoted to director and presented the first portable typewriter, the Olivetti MP1 .

During the Second World War , he fled to Switzerland , where he stayed in contact with the Resistance .

In 1947 he founded the Edizioni di Comunità book publisher . In the same year he formed a progressive cultural community movement ( Movimento Comunità ), from which a political party grew. The movement sought to unite the socialist wing with the liberal under a single flag. Olivetti divided his time between doing business and trying to practice and spread his utopian ideal of community life. His belief was that people who respect themselves and their environment can avoid war and poverty.

In 1949 Olivetti converted to Catholicism . In 1950 he revealed his vision of primacy in the political field of urbanism and planning. The city planning was just one of Olivetti's many passions.

In 1955 he received the Compasso d'Oro design award .

On the way to Switzerland at the end of February 1960, he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on the train and died.
