Carlo Cercignani (born June 17, 1939 in Teulada , Cagliari , † January 7, 2010 in Milan ) was an Italian mathematician and physicist.

Life

Cercignani graduated from the University of Milan with a Laureate in Physics in 1961 and in Mathematics in 1963. He was Professor of Mechanics and Aerodynamics at the Politecnico in Milan and a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the French Académie des Sciences . He was a specialist in the Boltzmann equation , which he dealt with in many of his books.

In 1998 he received the Medaglia ai benemeriti della cultura e dell'arte. From 1984 to 1987 he was chairman of the mathematics committee of the national research council CNR.
