Bartholomäus V. Welser the Elder (born June 25, 1484 in Memmingen , † March 28, 1561 in Amberg in Swabia) was an Augsburg patrician and wholesale merchant.

He was born as the son of Anton I. Welser, who at that time was the son-in-law of Hans Vöhlin the Elder . J. worked in the Memmingen Vöhlin Society, was born. His older sister was Margarete Welser , who married Konrad Peutinger in 1499 .

From 1519 to 1551 he was head of the Augsburg Welser Society, one of the largest trading, banking, shipping and mining companies of the 16th century. In 1528 he concluded an Asiento with the Spanish crown , with which the Welsers obtained governorship over the Spanish overseas province of Venezuela for a period of almost thirty years . As the banker of Emperor Charles V and the French King Franz I , he had a decisive influence on the powerful of his time.
