Orazio Svelto (born February 21, 1936 in Maglie ) is an Italian physicist who specializes in laser physics. He is a professor at the Milan Polytechnic .

Svelto has been involved with lasers since the early 1960s. Among other things, he dealt with the generation of ultra-short pulses, solid-state lasers, the physics of laser resonators and techniques of mode selection and applications in biomedicine. He introduced Supergaussian mirrors for lasers and erbium-ytterbium doped fiber lasers .

He is a member of the Accademia dei Lincei , the Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze detta dei XL and the Lombard Academy of Sciences.

He wrote a popular textbook on lasers. He has published over 300 scientific papers and holds three patents (2011).

In 2006 he received the Charles Hard Townes Award and in 1998 the Quantum Electronics Prize of the European Physical Society. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the Optical Society of America . In 2005 he received the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic for Science, Culture and Art. In 2011 he received the Julius Springer Prize . He is a member of the Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze .
