Filippo Mazzola (* around 1460 in Parma ; † 1505 there ) was an Italian Renaissance painter . He is the father of the much better known Mannerist painter Girolamo Francesco Mazzola, known as Parmigianino .

Life

Little is known about the life of Mazzola. The Mazzola family originally came from Pontremoli , but settled in Parma around 1305. Filippo's father was called Bartolomeo, his brothers Pier Ilario and Michele were also painters, of “little reputation” (Vasari), but after Filippo's early death they took care of his son Girolamo Francesco.

Filippo Mazzola became a student of the Cremonese painter Francesco Tacconi and then worked mainly in the region around Parma and Piacenza . On a trip to Venice he studied the works of his stylistic role models Antonello da Messina , Giovanni Bellini and Alvise Vivarini .

One of his largest and most important works is the altar in the collegiate church and basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Cortemaggiore from 1499: On ten panel paintings in two rows lying one above the other are in the center Mary with the child (below) and St. Christopher (above) and eight other saints.

The painter died at the age of 45 during a plague epidemic .
