Alvise Vivarini
Alvise Vivarini (or: Luigi Vivarini; * approx. 1442 in Venice ; † after 1503 ibid) was a Venetian painter of the Renaissance .
Life
Alvise Vivarini is the last of a dynasty of painters from the Quattrocento in Venice. His father was Antonio Vivarini and his uncle was Bartolomeo Vivarini , from whom he most likely received his education. One of his mother's brothers was the artist Giovanni d'Alemagna . It is believed that the painter Jacopo de 'Barbari was trained by him.
For his (now lost) large-format paintings in the hall of the great council in the Doge's Palace in Venice, he was awarded the honorary title of Depentor in Gran Conseio in 1492 and from then on received a salary of five ducats a month. Alvise was also a successful portrait painter .
His last work, Saint Ambrose and Other Saints in the Capella Millimesi , the northern chapel of the transept, in the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice, he was unable to finish before his death in 1503. One of his students, Marco Basaiti , completed it after his death.
Alvise Vivarini painted in the tempera technique and after Antonello da Messina's stay in Venice (around 1475) also in oil. His early style is characterized by sharply drawn contours , folds and shadows and a certain hardness as well as cool colors; his male figures are slim, long and ascetic . Later, under the influence of Antonello and Giovanni Bellini , it becomes a little more lyrical and softer.
