Antonio Vivarini and Giovanni d'Alemagna: Adoration of the Magi , ca.1450, Gemäldegalerie Berlin

Antonio Vivarini , also called Antonio da Murano, (* 1415 or 1418 ; † 1476 or 1484 ) was an Italian painter of the late Gothic and early Renaissance , who mainly worked in the Republic of Venice . He is probably the first of the Vivarini painter dynasty , who descended from Murano glassblowers . Bartolomeo was his younger brother and Alvise his son.

Life

Initially he worked with Andrea da Murano and his work shows influences from Gentile da Fabriano . His first known work is an altar from 1440 for the Basilica Eufrasiana di Parenzo (now Poreč , Croatia). It is kept in the Accademia in Venice. His most recent dated work is in the Vatican Museums and is dated to 1464, although he is believed to have died in 1476.

He worked together with his brother-in-law Giovanni d'Alemagna , whose work can only be traced until 1447. After that he mainly painted together with his younger brother Bartolomeo. His workshop was very extensive. He had numerous changing assistants. He may have been influenced by Andrea Mantegna , with whom he worked in the Ovetari Chapel of the Eremitani Church 1450-1451. The authorship of the painting is therefore not always easy to define.
