Paolo Emilio Zacchia (* 1554 in Castello di Vezzano ; † May 31, 1605 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was the son of Gaspare Zacchia and Veronica de 'Nobili, the family came from Genoa . His brother Laudivio Zacchia became cardinal in 1626, his nephew Paolo Emilio Rondinini in 1643. Another nephew, Gasparo Cecchinelli , became bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto .

He completed his studies at the University of Pisa, where he obtained a doctorate in both rights . In Rome, under the pontificate of Clement VIII, he became House Prelate of His Holiness and Auditor of the Apostolic Signature . He was extraordinary nuncio in Spain to get Philip II of Spain to intervene in favor of the Papal States when the latter claimed the Duchy of Ferrara from the ruler Cesare d'Este , who was considered illegitimate ; Zacchia successfully completed his diplomatic mission.

In the consistory of March 3, 1599, Clement VIII raised him to cardinal priest , Zacchia received the cardinal's hat and the titular church of San Marcello on March 17 of the same year.

On May 14, 1601, Cardinal Zacchia was appointed Bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto . The episcopal ordination received his Pope Clement VIII on May 27 of that year personally. Co- consecrators were the cardinals Camillo Borghese and Domenico Toschi , Bishop of Tivoli .

Cardinal Zacchia participated in the conclave of March 1605 , from which Leo XI. emerged as Pope. He was also present at the second conclave in 1605 , but could no longer personally participate in the election of Paul V because he was bedridden.

He died two weeks after the conclave and was buried in the church of San Marcello , his tomb has not been preserved.
