Laudivio Zacchia

Laudivio Zacchia (also Luigi Zacchia ; * 1565 in Castello di Vezzano ; † August 30, 1637 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Origin and early years

He came from a Genoese family and was the son of Gaspare Zacchia and his wife Veronica de 'Nobili from the family of the Lords of Vezzano. His brother Paolo Emilio Zacchia (1554–1605) became cardinal in 1599, as did his grandson Paolo Emilio Rondinini . He was also the uncle of Gasparo Cecchinelli , Bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto .

Laudivio Zacchia studied at the University of Pisa, where he received his doctorate in law . He married Laura Biassa de 'Nobili and had two children with her, a son and a daughter. The son Marcello died at the age of 18 and was buried in the cathedral of Montefiascone. The daughter Felice (* 1593) married Alessandro Rondinini at the age of 17; the couple had nine children, including the future Cardinal Paolo Emilio Rondinini.

Church career

After his wife's death, Laudivio left Zacchia Vezzano and moved to Rome around 1600 to live with his brother, who was already a cardinal at the time. He worked for the Apostolic Chamber and as a consistorial advocate and was appointed Apostolic Protonotary on January 21, 1603 . He later entered the clergy , and on July 23, 1605, the archbishop of Ravenna, Pietro Cardinal Aldobrandini , gave him minor orders ; he received the ordination as subdeacon the following day and on July 25, 1605 the ordination as a deacon , both also by Cardinal Aldobrandini. On July 26, 1605, he was ordained a priest , again through Cardinal Aldobrandini .

On August 17, 1605, Pope Paul V named Laudivio Zacchia bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto, after this office had become vacant due to the death of his brother Paolo Emilio († May 31, 1605). The Archbishop of Ravenna, Cardinal Aldobrandini, gave him his episcopal ordination on August 28 of the same year in the Roman church of Santa Maria in Vallicella ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Paolo Alberi , the former Bishop of Ragusa , and Metellus Bichi , Bishop of Sovana . Laudivio Zacchia was nuncio in Venice from May 12, 1621 to December 16, 1623 . From December 27, 1624 he was Prefect of the Apostolic Palace .

In the consistory of January 19, 1626 , Pope Urban VIII created him cardinal priest . Laudivio Zacchia received the cardinal's hat and the titular church of San Sisto on February 9 of the same year. He was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars in 1627 , but resigned in 1628. On September 17, 1629 he moved to the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli . In 1630 he resigned to the diocese of Montefiascone in favor of his nephew Gasparo Cecchinelli. From 1631 to 1637 he was protector of the Republic of Genoa and thus its representative to the Holy See .

Proceedings against Galileo Galilei

Laudivio Zacchia was a member of the ten-member cardinals commission in the second investigation against Galileo Galilei from September 23, 1632 to January 12, 1634. When the judgment was made on June 22, 1633, he was one of the three cardinals who did not sign the condemnation of Galileo , the other two cardinals were Gaspare Borgia and Francesco Barberini the Elder.

Laudivio Zacchia died in the early hours of the morning of August 30, 1637 and was buried in the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
