The Università Iuav di Venezia , IUAV or Iuav for short , is an Italian public university for architecture, design, theater, fashion, fine arts, urban planning and spatial planning in Venice and an offshoot in Mestre . Until 2001 it operated as the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia .

The institution was founded in 1926 as Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia by Giovanni Bordiga , then President of the Academy of Fine Arts, and has its origins in the establishment of the specialty course in architecture in 1923 at the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia . It was the first pure architecture school in Italy. In addition to the faculties for architecture and urban and regional planning, there is the faculty for design and art (since 2001) and the faculty for project culture (since 2008); In 2012 the reorganization took place with the department for architectural construction and maintenance, the department for culture of the project and the department for design and planning in complex environments.
In 2015/16, 4,285 students studied four Bachelor's and six Master's courses as well as certificate and doctoral programs at the IUAV. There are cooperation agreements with over 200 universities worldwide. Well-known visiting professorships were Le Corbusier , Louis Kahn , Frank Lloyd Wright , Alejandro Aravena , Judith Clark , Richard Serra and others.
The headquarters of the Università Iuav di Venezia is the old cotton factory in Santa Marta as well as in the Palazzo Ca 'Tron , the former convent building of San Nicola da Tolentino in Venice and others. Rectors were Giovanni Bordiga , Guido Cirilli , Giuseppe Samonà , Carlo Minelli , Carlo Scarpa , Carlo Aymonino , Valeriano Pastor , Paolo Ceccarelli , Marino Folin , Carlo Magnani , Amerigo Restucci ; Alberto Ferlenga has been the rector of Iuav since 2015 .
