The University of Sassari ( Italian Università degli Studi di Sassari , Latin Universitas Turritana Sacerensis , Sassarese Unibessiddài di Sàssari , Sardinian Universidade de Tàtari ), UNISS for short , is a state university in the city of Sassari in Sardinia with around 12,000 students . It was founded and financed by the Sardinian businessman Alessio Fontana in May 1562 for reasons of educational policy and was initially run by a Jesuit college .
The current rector is Massimo Carpinelli.
