After the earthquake in Friuli in 1976 , the Italian government decided, as part of the reconstruction work, to set up a higher education and research facility based on the model of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa . The Scuola di Perfezionamento in Fisica (Advanced School of Physics) , which had existed in Miramare near Trieste since 1964, was incorporated into SISSA, which was founded in 1978 . In 1997 the first issue of SISSA's scientific journal , the Journal of High Energy Physics, appeared . In 2010, SISSA moved into a new domicile, which is a renovated and converted former sanatorium in a park with a sea view between Trieste and Opicina . The new location is on the Trieste – Opicina railway line .
