The Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori ( IUSS ; German  " University Institute for Higher Studies " ; also called Scuola Universitaria Superiore , IUSS ) is a state-owned Italian elite university in Pavia . Its seat is in the medieval Palazzo del Broletto next to the cathedral .

Admission and range of courses

The IUSS serves to promote particularly talented students through an interdisciplinary additional academic offer. Students are selected through a nationwide selection process. The students of the IUSS are also enrolled at the University of Pavia and have to maintain a high grade point average there, otherwise the additional studies at the IUSS will end. The additional studies runs parallel to the Bachelor - (Degree) or to the Master's program (laurea magistral) . The students are accommodated in the Collegio Borromeo , in the Collegio Ghislieri and other comparable institutions, which also offer additional academic and cultural events and facilities. There is a small financial grant and there are no tuition or other fees.

The students are assigned to four academic classes of the IUSS, depending on their regular course of study at the University of Pavia: human sciences , social sciences , natural sciences and technology as well as biomedicine , whereby the contents of the other classes are always taught. The events are also held in English. After successfully completing the regular courses at the University of Pavia and the additional course, the students receive a diploma from the IUSS. In addition, Masters can also be obtained at the IUSS and doctoral programs lasting at least three years can be carried out.

history

The IUSS was founded in 1997 by the University of Pavia, the Collegi Borromeo, Ghislieri, Novo and Santa Caterina and the Ente per il diritto allo studio (EDISU). The elite universities Scuola Normale Superiore and Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa , with which the IUSS was legally assimilated in 2005, served as a model .
