The Collegio Ghislieri is a student boarding school in Pavia , which was founded shortly after the Collegio Borromeo , traditionally has a very good reputation and has a long history. The college is co-founder of the IUSS ( Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori ) of Pavia.

It was founded in 1567 at the instigation of Pope Pius V , whose maiden name was Antonio Michele Ghislieri , and was traditionally intended for male students. In 1965, however, a section for female students was also set up, which was named after Sandra Bruni .

The college is now under the patronage of the Italian President and is recognized by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research as an institution of high cultural qualification. It accepts students from the University of Pavia who have distinguished themselves through special achievements in a public, annual entrance test.

The college has one of the largest private libraries in Northern Italy , with around 160,000 volumes covering every field of knowledge.

The Collegio Ghislieri also runs exchange programs with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , the Maximilianeum in Munich, St John's College in Cambridge, St Hugh's College in Oxford, the École normal supérieure in Paris, the University of Strasbourg , the University of Geneva , the University Zurich and the University of Oregon in the USA.

Among the people who have lived at the Collegio during its long history are the comedy writer Carlo Goldoni , the psychoanalyst Johannes Cremerius , the statesman Giuseppe Zanardelli , the founder of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan Agostino Gemelli , the historian Ugoberto Alfassio Grimaldi , the Lawyer Guido Rossi , best known as the extraordinary commissioner of the Italian football federation FIGC during the great football scandal in Italy in 2005/2006 , and Virginio Rognoni , former Italian minister of interior, justice and defense and vice-president of the Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura ( CSM).
