The University of Catania (Università degli studi di Catania) is a university in Italy . Founded in 1434, it is the oldest and largest university in Sicily .
Areas
The University of Catania is divided into five areas and further into departments and special didactic structures:
- Area medica - Scuola di medicina ( Medical area - School of Medicine)
- Area scientifica ( mathematical - natural science area)
- Area tecnico-scientifica (area of technical sciences)
- Area economica, politico-sociale e giuridica (area of economics , political science / sociology and jurisprudence )
- Area umanistica ( humanistic area)
Scuola Superiore
In 1998 the university founded the Scuola Superiore di Catania to promote particularly talented students .

The main building of the university is the Palazzo dell'Università on Via Etnea . The seven sections of the Dipartimento di Scienze Umanistiche (Department of Humanistic Sciences) are housed in the former Benedictine monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena .
