The University of Naples Parthenope ( Italian : Università degli Studi di Napoli Parthenope ), formerly also called Istituto Universitario Navale , is one of the state universities in Naples . It was founded in 1920 as a university for seafaring and maritime trade . From the 1980s it was expanded to include other departments. It has had its current name since 2006. Parthenope has been the city goddess of Naples and a poetic name for the city since ancient times.

history

The proposal for the establishment of the college came in 1919 from the admiral and senator Pasquale Leonardi Cattolica. With the decree of May 30, 1920 it was established under the name Regio Istituto Superiore Navale . For a long time it only had the two faculties of maritime economics and nautical science . In 1940 the name was changed to Istituto Universitario Navale , based on the prestigious Istituto Universitario Orientale . From the Faculty of Maritime Economics, the Faculty of Economics for Transport and International Trade emerged in 1987, which then gradually developed beyond this specialization, later other faculties followed, including law , engineering and sports science (through the incorporation of the former sports university ISEF Naples ). Due to this expansion and the strong increase in the number of students, the conversion to a university took place in 2006.

organization

The university is no longer divided into faculties, but into schools and departments . The university's headquarters are at the port, at 38 Via Ammiraglio Ferdinando Acton , next to Castel Nuovo . A few hundred meters to the southwest is the Palazzo Pacanowski with the School of Economics and Law. The departments for engineering and technology are located in the Centro direzionale office and business center. The original nautical and maritime core of the university is now located there. North of Castel Nuovo is the Department of Human Movement Science (ISEF) in a building on Via Medina . In the Posillipo district , the university maintains a conference center in the Villa Doria d'Angri .
