Nautical school

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A nautical school is a college or technical college related to the merchant navy .

At a seafaring school, the seaman acquires a certificate of competency , also known as a patent , which allows him to operate a ship as a ship's officer (the independently responsible leader of a sea watch , formerly also a helmsman ) or as a captain (the person with overall responsibility for ship operation ).

The 1995 amendment to the STCW agreement created minimum international requirements for training and standardized the system of patents internationally. Since then, a patent according to STCW 95 can be acquired in four semesters at technical schools. In eight semesters (including six theoretical semesters and two practical semesters on board) the STCW patent and an academic degree (previously graduate engineer or graduate industrial engineer for maritime transport , as part of the Bologna process now Bachelor of Science ( B.Sc.)).

In addition to the courses in nautical science and ship engineering, most universities with a nautical department also offer other courses in connection with shipping, for example maritime transport and port management , international transport management, integral port management, transport operations / logistics, cruise industry management or the international course Shipping and Chartering.
