Accademia Italiana della Marina Mercantile

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Accademia Italiana della Marina Mercantile (German: "Italienische Handelsmarineakademie", English officially: Italian Shipping Academy ) is an Italian nautical school in Genoa . The foundation of the same name (Fondazione) under private law is responsible for the academy and three related educational institutions. The academy has the status of Istituto Tecnico Superiore and is therefore part of the tertiary education sector .

Historical background

In Italy there have been technical colleges for a long time , including those specializing in seafaring (Istituto tecnico nautico) . The tertiary education area was only expanded after the turn of the millennium to include a higher vocational education system (Istruzione e Formazione Tecnica Superiore) , which is in part comparable with universities of applied sciences and vocational academies in German-speaking countries. The new educational institutions with the name Istituto Tecnico Superiore emerged and are usually emerging from state technical colleges, with the support of universities, companies, associations and state bodies that participate in private-law sponsoring foundations. The Handesmarineakademie in Genoa, founded in 2005, was not only part of this development, but also helped to prepare it in many ways.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the number of pupils in the technical colleges specializing in seafaring decreased drastically. In addition, the STCW Convention required a reform and addition of this training direction. The graduates of the above-mentioned technical colleges first had to meet the additional STCW standards through self-study, as part of in-company training or with the support of private educational institutions. The establishment of the Merchant Navy Academy in Genoa took place against this background, even before the higher vocational education system was introduced. The then province of Genoa proposed the establishment of the academy and received support from shipping companies , shipyards , trade unions , the coast guard , the ministries for transport and education , the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA), port operators and a number of associations. The province acquired the Villa Candida in the Genoese district of Albaro for the new academy and had it renovated, converted and equipped accordingly.

The Foundation

The Fondazione Accademia Italiana della Marina Mercantile is a non-profit foundation under private law. Donors include: the metropolitan city of Genoa , the University of Genoa , the San Giorgio College of Maritime Studies in Genoa, the operator of the port of Genoa , RINA, Fincantieri and associations of shipping companies, as well as employers and professional associations. The foundation is responsible for the following educational institutions.

The Merchant Navy Academy

The Merchant Marine Academy offers nautical, technical and logistical courses that are free of charge for students. The number of study places depends on the needs of the economy. One hundred new students are accepted annually. Men and women between the ages of 18 and 26 from all countries of the European Union can apply to participate in the selection process . The prerequisite is the university entrance qualification , whereby only graduates of high schools with a focus on transport and logistics are allowed to start the training immediately. All others must complete a preparatory course. If they are equally qualified, women, those already in employment and former marines will be given preference until certain quotas have been reached. The training to become a nautical or technical ship officer and the logistics technician takes two years. Later advanced training courses, for example for first officers or chief engineers, are subject to a fee.

Further academies of the foundation

The Accademia Ospitalità Crociere in Arenzano near Genoa specializes in gastronomy and animation on cruise ships . Ship cooks and pastry chefs are trained at ITS level; there are shorter courses for other specialist staff.

The Accademia Turismo del Mare in Lavagna near Genoa trains hotel clerks and multimedia technicians at ITS level , and it also offers shorter courses.

The International Maritime Safety Security Environment Academy (IMSSEA) in Arenzano is the international arm of the foundation. The training facility is recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO ) and offers courses for officials from foreign shipping administrations, especially those from the Third World . As such, it succeeds the former International Maritime Academy in Trieste .

Other academies in Italy

The example of the Merchant Naval Academy in Genoa has been followed by other technical colleges in Italy specializing in seafaring, local authorities and associations. ITS maritime schools have been set up in Gaeta , Cagliari and Trieste according to the pattern described above, and more are planned.

University courses in Scienze nautiche are only offered in Italy ( apart from the Accademia Navale ) at the University of Naples Parthenope , which was founded in 1920 as Regio Istituto Superiore Navale , renamed Istituto Universitario Navale in 1940 and has been a regular state university since 2006 . A distinction must be made here between shipbuilding and marine engineering courses that are offered at some other Italian universities. Particularly noteworthy are the universities of Genoa , Pisa , Naples and Trieste ,
