Multimedia technology
Multimedia technology is a branch of computer science that deals with the linking of different technologies in the field of multimedia. Both electrotechnical and software-technical aspects play a role. As a course of study , multimedia technology can be described as the intersection between media informatics and technical informatics .
Major fields of study
Multimedia technology is primarily characterized by the implementation of complex systems through the combination of different media. Therefore, the course covers many aspects of computer science. This avoids early specialization, which usually only takes place in the master’s degree. This universal training enables students to choose their job flexibly, as they come into contact with many technologies during their studies, which above all promotes the ability to quickly familiarize themselves with new subject areas. On the other hand, if you are interested in a certain aspect of computer science, you should choose a more specific course. As part of the multimedia technology course, u. a. the following topics are dealt with:
- Mathematical and technical basics
- Computer engineering and programming
- Software systems and applied programming
- Business administration and specialist English
- Multimedia basics
- Graphics / graphic data processing / image processing
- Technical basics and communication technology
- Databases / database systems / database programming / database management
- Multimedia interfaces and application programming
- Aspects of multimedia use
In addition to mathematics, the mathematical-technical basics include a. the subjects electronics and digital technology , basics of communications or automation technology and in-house energy technology as well as sensors and actuators . The basics of technical informatics, programming with modern programming languages , operating systems and the overarching methodology for designing software solutions ( software engineering ) are essential contents of the training.
This course should not be confused with (web) design or television technology. It is expressly a technical course that combines information technology and electrical engineering.
Study opportunities
Multimedia technology can be studied at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Wismar since 1998 and was enrolled there as a diploma course up to and including winter semester 2003/2004 . Since the 2004/2005 winter semester, the course has been offered there with a bachelor's degree. In addition, there is a consecutive master’s degree under the English name Multimedia Engineering , which focuses on language processing, image processing, network security and distributed computing. Further study options include a. at the University of Mittweida . Related courses of study are called media informatics or media technology z. B. to be found at the TU Ilmenau . Multimedia technology is not necessarily an entire course of study, but can often also be found as a specialization within a general computer science course.
