The Libera Università Maria Ss. Assunta (abbreviated LUMSA ; Ss. Stands for Santissima ; translated "Free University of the Most Holy Mary Assumed into Heaven ") is a private university based in Rome , Italy .

history

The college emerged from an Istituto Universitario and was founded on October 26, 1939 by the nun Luigia Tincani of the Missionary School Sisters ( Unione Santa Caterina da Siena delle missionarie della Scuola ). They founded together Cardinal Curia Giuseppe Pizzardo and supported by Pope Pius XII. the Istituto Superiore pareggiato di Magistero “Maria Ss. Assunta ” , which trained women religious to be teachers with academic degrees in Catholic schools. In 1967, lay students were accepted for the first time to study pedagogy, Italian language and literature or school administration.

On May 15, 1989, the state recognized and renamed a "Free University" with the admission of lay people (women and men). The university's headquarters were in Rome near Via della Conciliazione ; Subsidiaries were established in Palermo , Taranto and Gubbio .

A significant expansion of the university took place under Rector Dalla Torre . A Codice etico was established. The statutes of the LUMSA are based on the Catholic Church and begin with "The LUMSA promotes, on the basis of Christian principles, the Catholic tradition and the constitution, through study and research the determination of the truth ...". All students are obliged to attend theological lectures and take exams. In 2011, LUMSA was a pioneer among Italian universities in converting faculties into departments ( dipartementi ) on the basis of the new higher education law in Italy.

The management of the university includes a rector and a president of the “ruling” university council, currently Cardinal Attilio Nicora . A representative of the Holy See appointed by the Vatican State Secretariat as well as two delegates from the (papal) Cardinal Vicar for Rome take part in the University's Administrative Council. An envoy from the Order of Mission School Sisters also belongs to the panel.

University

The university offers bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees as well as training and further education in four specialist areas. After three years the first degree, the “laurea triennale”, is achieved.

Around 6,000 students are taught by 100 full-time professors and 250 part-time professors and lecturers from other universities.
