Conte Giuseppe Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto (born August 27, 1943 in Rome ) is an Italian legal scholar . He was President of the Tribunale dello Stato della Città del Vaticano , the court of the Vatican State .

From 1991 to 2014 he was rector of Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta (LUMSA) . From 2011 to 2017 he was general governor of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and from 2001 to 2015 he was the delegate of the Holy See to the international organization UNIDROIT .

family

Giuseppe Dalla Torre came from a noble family from Treviso . His father was Paolo Dalla Torre (1910-1993), Conte of Sanguinetto , and his mother Antonietta Pulvirenti De Grazia. His father was an art historian and general director of the Vatican Museums from 1961 to 1975. The grandfather Giuseppe Dalla Torre (1885-1967) was a journalist and from 1924 to 1960 director of L'Osservatore Romano , the daily newspaper of the Vatican.

His brother was the literary scholar Fra 'Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto ; He had been Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome of the Order of Malta since 2009 and was Governor of the Grand Master from April 29, 2017, and thus acting Grand Master of the Order of Malta until his death.

Life

Dalla Torre graduated in 1967 in Law at the La Sapienza University and was in 1968 canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University doctorate. He was a research fellow at the University of Modena and assistant professor at the University of Bologna . In 1980 he was appointed full professor at the University of Bologna . He taught canon law from 1980 to 1990 and constitutional law from 1987 to 1990 . He lectured at the Lateran University , Urbaniana and the Angelicum .

From 1976 to 1983 he was secretary of the delegation for the revision of the Lateran Treaties between the Holy See and the State of Italy on behalf of the Italian government . He is an advisor to several papal ministries.

Giuseppe Dalla Torre was President of the Tribunale dello Stato della Città del Vaticano , the court of the Vatican State , until October 2019 , and was the presiding judge in the Vatileaks trial against Paolo Gabriele .

From 1991 to 2014 Giuseppe Dalla Torre was rector of the Roman Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta (LUMSA) , where he also teaches public law and canon law . He is Vice-President of the Coordination Office of the Universities of Rome (CRUL - Coordinamento delle Università del Lazio) and of the Rectors' Conference of the Italian Universities (CRUI - Conferenza dei Rettori delle Università Italiane). He was president of the Central Union of Italian Catholic Lawyers (Unione Giuristi Cattolici Italiani). He was a member of the Consiglio Scientifico dell'Istituto “Enciclopedia Treccani” and President of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Istituto Vittorio Bachelet . He is a member of the Italian National Bioethics Commission (Comitato Nazionale per la Bioetica) and was advisor to the Presidency of Mario Monti .

Since 2011, Giuseppe Dalla Torre was the successor of Peter Graf Wolff-Metternich to the canal as general governor of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . Edwin Frederick O'Brien , Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, named him a Knight of the Collar on June 26, 2016 in Rome. On July 27, 2017, he handed over the office of Governor General to Agostino Borromeo . On October 24, 2017, he was appointed Honorary Governor General of the Papal Lay Order by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien. He was also awarded the Golden Palm of Jerusalem for his work .

Dalla Torre has published over 500 scholarly publications, including monographs and essays on canon law, canon law, and Italian public law and constitutional law.
