Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto
Giacomo Benedetto Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto (born December 9, 1944 in Rome ; † April 29, 2020 there ) was a professed knight of the Order of Malta and since May 2, 2018 the 80th Grand Master of the Order of Malta . His full title was "His Highness and Eminence, Fra 'Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto, Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Knights and Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta".
Before that, Dalla Torre was Profess-Honor- and Devotion-Grand Cross-Bailli and since February 12th 2009 Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome of the Order of Malta . Until then, he had been Grand Commander of the Order of Malta since 2004 , one of the order's four high offices . From April 29, 2017 to May 2, 2018, he was the governor of the Grand Master and thus acting Grand Master of the Order of Malta for one year.
Life
Giacomo Dalla Torre came from a noble family from Treviso . His father was Paolo Dalla Torre (1910-1993), Conte of Sanguinetto , and his mother Antonietta Pulvirenti De Grazia (1917-2004). His father was an art historian and general director of the Vatican Museums from 1961 to 1975. His brother is the lawyer Giuseppe Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto , who was general governor of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem from 2011 to 2017 . The grandfather Giuseppe Dalla Torre (1885-1967) was a journalist and from 1920 to 1960 director of L'Osservatore Romano , the daily newspaper of the Vatican.
Dalla Torre studied literature and philosophy at the La Sapienza University in Rome, where she received her doctorate. He specialized in Christian archeology and art history. He was professor of literary studies and art history at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, where he later served as deputy director. He also taught classical Greek. Among other things, he was librarian and chief archivist for the university's research collections. Dalla Torre was the author of numerous treatises on art and bibliography, particularly on the history of medieval art.
Giacomo Dalla Torre died of cancer diagnosed in January 2020.
Religious life
After his acceptance into the Order of Malta in 1985, Dalla Torre made perpetual vows in 1993 and became a professed knight . From 1994 to 1999 he was the Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Lombardy and Veneto. Since 1999 he has been a member of the Sovereign Council and various commissions.
In 2004 he was elected Grand Commander by the General Chapter and, after the death of Grand Master Fra ' Andrew Bertie on February 7, 2008, until the election of the new Grand Master Fra' Matthew Festing on March 11, 2008, he was constitutionally appointed Governor (ad interim ) directed.
On February 12, 2009, the Grand Master and the Sovereign Council approved the election of Bailli Fra 'Giacomo Dalla Torre as the 67th Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome, who at the same time declared his resignation from the Sovereign Council under Article 159 of the Codex.
On April 29, 2017, the Grand Council of State of the Order elected him as Grand Master Governor and thus reigning Grand Master for one year in accordance with Article 23 § 5 of the Order's Constitution. On May 2, 2018, he was elected Grand Master of the Order of Malta . The Grand Master of the Order of Malta is awarded the rank of cardinal by the Catholic Church and he directs the affairs of government. Under his leadership, the order of knights began to modernize and open up.
During a consultation with Pope Francis in June 2019, topics such as the crisis in Venezuela, aid for the Colombian people and the situation in the Middle East were discussed with a focus on humanitarian and diplomatic opportunities for the Order of Malta. In October 2019, Dalla Torre was in Germany, among other things for talks with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble .
Dalla Torre has always made a personal commitment to helping the needy and serving meals to the homeless at Rome's Termini and Tiburtina stations . He was a participant in numerous international pilgrimages of the Order of Malta to Lourdes and in national pilgrimages to Loreto and Assisi . A special concern of Dalla Torre was the participation in the international summer camps of the order for disabled young people.
