Paolo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto (born July 17, 1910 in Padua , † November 11, 1993 in Rome ) was an Italian art historian and general director of the Vatican Museums from 1961 to 1975. He was also city ​​councilor and vice mayor of the city of Rome.

Life

Paolo Dalla Torre was a son of Giuseppe Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto (1885-1967) and Maria Hedwig Lochenies de Fontenois (1880-1960), born in Kaiserslautern. His father was a journalist and from 1920 to 1960 director of L'Osservatore Romano , the daily newspaper of the Vatican. He married Antonietta Pulvirenti De Grazia (1917-2004); the sons Giuseppe and Giacomo are from the marriage .

Paolo Dalla Torre studied at La Sapienza University in Rome and had a doctorate in art history. His dissertation was banned immediately after its publication in 1936; a university career was not made possible for Della Torre because he opposed Italian fascism .

From 1937 he held various positions in the Vatican and in 1938 was among other things scientific secretary of the Lateran Museum . From 1947 to 1961 he held high positions in the city of Rome, most recently as city councilor, deputy mayor and budget auditor. He also directed the city magazine "Capitolium".

From 1960 to 1970 he was Director General for Monuments, Museums and Pontifical Galleries and from 1961 to 1975 Director General of the Vatican Museums .
