With the death of his predecessor Louis-Désiré Maigret on June 11, 1882, he became Vicar Apostolic of Hawaii. His term of office was marked by the massive immigration of Portuguese immigrants from Madeira. He was able to skillfully alleviate the tensions that arose. He made particular efforts to improve general education; for this he founded many schools on the island. He also accompanied the death of Damian de Veuster , who was ill with leprosy and with whom he was in contact by letter. Köckemann also died three years later.
