Heart of Midlothian (Edinburgh)
The Heart of Midlothian ( German Heart of Midlothian ) is a eingepflastertes in the pavement heart on the Royal Mile just west of St. Giles in Edinburgh , Scotland .
The heart marks the former entrance to the Tolbooth , an administrative center that housed a prison. The building represented the center of Midlothian County.
The title of a short story by Walter Scott and the name of the football club Heart of Midlothian , which has the heart as a coat of arms, are derived from this.
Traditionally, this heart is spat upon. Originally, the spitting took place as a sign of contempt for the former prison. Today, however, many see it as a gesture of happiness.
