Giuseppe Mercalli (born May 21, 1850 in Milan , † March 19, 1914 in Naples ) was an Italian seismologist , volcanologist , Catholic priest and inventor of the Mercallis scale named after him for determining the strength of earthquakes .

After his ordination , Mercalli studied geology with Antonio Stoppani . He was first a professor at the seminaries in Milan and Domodossola . In 1892 he moved to the University of Catania , where he taught mineralogy and geology, and in 1892 to the University of Naples as a teacher of volcanology. From 1911 to 1914 he was head of the Vesuvius Observatory near Naples.

Mercalli's book Active Volcanoes of the Earth was published in 1889 . In 1902 Mercalli developed a scale for measuring earthquake strengths, which he published in 1903, and a categorization of volcanic eruptions.
