Vesuvius observatory
The Vesuvius Observatory ( Osservatorio Vesuviano ) is a scientific institute for the research and observation of volcanological and geophysical processes and for the observation of volcanoes . His tasks include in particular the observation of the areas of Campania with active volcanism ( Vesuvius , Phlegraean Fields and Ischia ).
The observatory is operated and funded by the Italian Ministry of Education and Research (MIUR) as part of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology . Its tasks also include reporting threatening events to the civil defense and disaster control authority ; for this purpose it maintains a permanently manned surveillance center in Naples .
The building from 1841 on the slope of Mount Vesuvius houses a museum, laboratories and a library.
history
The facility was founded in 1841. It is the oldest volcanological institute in the world. The directors of the observatory included:
